LSSU E-Newsletter September 6, 2018

A Message From Superintendent Tracy Wrend

I hope you all enjoyed your Labor Day weekend and are now ready for the fall months ahead.

We spent much of our summer months preparing for the current school year. A part of that planning included thoughtful consideration of how we can better communicate with everyone who makes up the LSSU community.  Open communication between LSSU employees and School Board Directors and the community is vital to providing our students with the best quality education possible.

With seven schools, three boards, two school districts and one supervisory union it can be confusing to know where to go for the information you are seeking. To centralize where people receive information, we will distribute a version of this E-Newsletter following school board meetings, twice per month. These E-Newsletters will include timely supervisory union level information as well as board briefs detailing the highlights of both EMUU and Stowe school board meetings. The E-Newsletters can be found at the Thursday following each board meeting. You can also receive these directly by email by subscribing at

If you have a concern about a student matter, please contact your student’s teacher or your school principal. You can also contact me at [email protected]. Similarly, if you have concerns regarding curriculum, including our transition to proficiency based learning, please communicate with your school principal or myself.

The EMUU and Stowe School Board Directors are committed to providing the highest quality education possible for all of our students and greatly value public participation. Boards want to conduct their business with the benefit of public input and expertise. School budget or infrastructure questions and concerns can be communicated directly with school board directors. Board briefs will be included in the E-Newsletter following board meetings while the more detailed board minutes and agendas can be found at: and

Thank you again for entrusting your children’s education with us. We are looking forward to a great school year.

EMUU Board Brief
September 4, 2018

Annual Meeting Date
To encourage more community member attendance at the district’s annual meeting, the board discussed options for changing the date with Elmore and Morristown Town Clerks Sharon Draper and Sara Haskins.  Board members will be attending the Peoples Academy (PA) and Peoples Academy Middle Level (PAML) Open House on Thursday, September 20, from 5:30-7:00pm and the Morristown Elementary School (MES) Open House on October 4 from 5:30-6:30pm to get parent feedback on meeting date preferences.  The board members will revisit the annual meeting date later this fall.

Please note that the annual meeting date for the Elmore-Morristown Unified Union is set for the evening of Thursday, February 28, 2019, in the Auditorium at PA.  Please mark your calendars for this important opportunity.

Equity and Inclusion
Board Chair Stephanie Craig is participating with a group of leaders from across our region in a newly formed Coalition on Inclusion and Diversity.  The committee is planning to develop a collective vision statement to distribute regionally and to form a steering committee, including opportunities for broader participation.

Facilities Maintenance and Improvements
The board toured the grounds of MES, replaced sidewalk and roadway between PA/PAML and MES, improved playground drainage and new bus loop at MES.  These projects, along with the bus loop at PA/PAML and new windows and siding on the middle level wing, were completed over the summer. The board approved professional installation of the new playground equipment at MES, which will be installed in mid-September.

The work on facilities reflects actualization of the board’s on-going efforts to develop and implement a multi-year capital planning process.  The board is thankful to the community for supporting investments in a capital fund which allow the maintenance and improvement of our communities’ investment in its schools, while being respectful of the impact on taxpayers.

LSSU’s E-Newsletter, including board briefs, will be posted at the Thursday following each board meeting. You can read it there, or receive it directly by email by subscribing at More detailed information regarding Elmore-Morristown Unified Union school board meetings can be found in our board minutes:
