A Message From Superintendent Tracy Wrend
Strong school-community partnerships are fundamental to the success of our students, schools and vibrant communities. Support for the school district budget is one very important way that this partnership is realized. While our school district’s budget looks different than it has in the past, the basic components are the same. The budget continues the current, valued and high quality academic and extracurricular programming for students offered in all schools of LSUU.
Unfortunately, factors largely outside of our control have led to an increase of almost four percent in the overall budget. These cost drivers are not due to the merger but are instead caused by rising health insurance premium rates, increased transportation costs, and inflationary increases for existing services. Additionally, the Common Level of Appraisal (CLA) is a significant factor in the final estimated tax rates for each town. So, how will these issues impact tax rates? The estimated local homestead tax rate for Elmore is $1.496 (a decrease of 2 cents from FY20), Morristown is $1.505 (an increase of 5.7 cents from FY20) and Stowe is $1.649 (an increase of 10.9 cents from FY20).
Approval of this budget is important as it allows us to continue the high quality academic and extracurricular programming for our students in all of our schools.

Lamoille South Unified Union Board Brief
February 3, 2020
Student Travel Plans
We reviewed overseas student travel plans for the upcoming months and were notified that the student trip to China scheduled for April has been canceled. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that travelers avoid all nonessential travel to the People’s Republic of China. Considerations included the CDC and Department of State travel advisories, the financial loss scenarios for students/families, the ability to ensure all students would be safe if anyone, student or staff, became ill, as well as information about what is happening on the ground in China on a day-to-day basis.
Student trips to France and Galapagos Islands are still approved, and we will continue to monitor travel advisories to ensure student safety.
Board Election Update
Norm Williams and Erica Loomis are running unopposed as Stowe representatives on the LSUU board. There were no petitions submitted for the three year seat in Morristown. A write-in candidate must be a Morristown resident and legal voter and receive at least 30 write-in votes from across the three towns. The person with the most write-in votes over 30 is elected. If that individual declines, the vacancy will be filled through board appointment. Morristown residents are encouraged to consider joining the board.
Voting on board elections and the proposed budget will be held on Tuesday, March 3, at your local town office. Early voting is available.
We will be submitting information regarding the proposed FY21 LSUU budget in upcoming editions of the Stowe Reporter and News and Citizen.
The LSUU Annual Report provides information on the proposed budget and may be viewed here. A printed version of the publication is also available at your town office.
