LSUU E-Newsletter July 16, 2020

A Message From Superintendent Tracy Wrend

We are planning on school opening for all or nearly all students on August 24, 2020.

We can and will follow the CDC’s May 2020 Guidance and Vermont’s Strong and Healthy Start Guidance. Vermont’s Strong and Healthy Start Guidance lays out three steps for schools to consider and implement.

Step 1: Students at home with 100% remote instruction.

Step 2: Students in school with enhanced physical distancing measures in place.

Step 3: Students in school with practicable physical distancing measures in place.

LSUU will begin the school year in Step 2, with all or nearly all students in school and enhanced physical distancing measures in place. We are planning now for changes in regional health circumstances so that we can respond as needed and potentially move between the three laid out steps, while providing ongoing support for safety and physical well-being, social-emotional well-being, and learning.

Student’s daily routines, including morning arrival, classroom routines, and instructional delivery will be different. As is laid out in the Vermont Agency of Education’s (AOE) guidance, all faculty, staff, and students will be required to wear masks, students will need to stay with a specific cohort of classmates throughout the day, and all students will have a health screening at their first point of contact - either on the bus or at the school. Your principal will be reaching out shortly to explain additional details of what this enhanced physical distancing will look like during our upcoming return to school.

For additional information about plans underway for the schools within LSUU, please review our Strong and Healthy Plan Update.

We recognize that some families who have high-risk household members may be interested in additional remote learning options. We do not yet know if this will be possible for our faculty to manage in addition to their in-person instruction duties and are awaiting guidance from AOE on this matter. We will continue to discuss this possibility with our faculty as we await guidance and will communicate when the guidance is received and we have a firmer sense of whether or not this option will be available.

While many of these changes will not be easy and the world remains an uncertain place, we are confident that we have the knowledge and tools in place to keep our students, faculty, and staff safe and healthy during the upcoming school year. We know more and have many more tools for prevention and response than we did last March. As we have done since the outbreak began, we will continue to rely on health experts to guide our practice and decision-making.

Best,
Tracy

SBAC 2019
Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) results from 2019 for students from Elmore-Morristown and Stowe were shared.  Statewide assessments can provide useful information for comparing student achievement in the same subject and grade level across school years, between student groups, or in comparison to statewide benchmarks. It is one of several assessments used to evaluate an individual student’s growth and achievement. The SBAC was not administered in 2020 due to COVID-19.
