A Message From Superintendent Tracy Wrend

Important Notice - School Grounds Remain Closed
We are closely monitoring changing guidance as Vermont gradually loosens the stay-home-stay-safe order.  We appreciate your patience as we review updates and apply new guidance in our local context.  We will continue to communicate about new developments as we are able.  For the time being, school grounds remain closed to the public including for recreation purposes.  Also, organized sports are still not allowed at this time.  There should be no school-sponsored or school-related sports or group gatherings of any kind.  We will provide an update when school grounds are open for outdoor recreation activities.

Parent Feedback is Requested
Parent feedback from a previous survey in early April was vital in helping us plan some improvements to distance learning.  Please take a moment to complete this short survey,  Round 2:  Distance Learning - How are things going? as a second check-in.  This will help us learn more about how things have changed for you and any additional needs for instruction and student engagement.  We are aiming to provide students and families with access to an educational routine that is engaging with a reasonable amount of parent/family support.

Memorial Day Observances
Due to the current circumstances, our traditional Memorial Day observances in Morrisville and Stowe will be modified this year.  Individual schools will be planning observances at the class and school level.  We look forward to a time in the future when we can again observe this important day with our communities in person. On behalf of all in the LSUU learning community, I extend our deepest thanks to all who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Spring Sports
The spring sports season was canceled as of April 30, 2020.  I’d like to extend a special thanks to our coaches for their work to support our students in staying healthy, sustaining positive attitudes, and staying engaged in learning.  We know that extracurriculars are an important part of the school experience for students and are saddened that our athletes are sidelined.  One of the most important benefits of school athletics is developing a lifelong love of healthy activities.  Whether or not our athletes and teams can compete, we encourage our student-athletes to sustain that love through safe, physically distant practice and training for future seasons!

Looking to the Future
As we look to the end of the school year, summer, and the 2020-2021 school year, we are planning for all possible scenarios with the hopes of strong, positive social connections for students, in-person instructional supports, and being on campus for learning in the fall.  We are expecting direction from the Agency of Education shortly and will begin to provide information about the end of the school year as early as next week.  We are also hard at work designing options for summer supports for students with preparations for the next school year at the center.   It is likely that normal school operations will not resume in full until there are broadly available screening and treatment options and a vaccine.  While the details will emerge in the coming weeks and months, what is clear is that we have a strong learning community, caring families, and a collaborative spirit. We will continue to work together to adapt to changing needs.

Lamoille South Unified Union Board Brief
May 4, 2020

Distance Learning Update
As we enter the sixth week of distance learning, the transition from in-person instruction to distance learning continues to evolve and improve daily.  Many of the traditional end of year events and activities will look very different this year, and we anticipate that the district will receive further guidance from the Agency of Education this week.

The board has suggested that direct communication between teachers and families be increased and encouraged at all levels, but especially at the middle and high schools.  The memo recently shared to families from Valerie Sullivan, LSUU Director of Curriculum and Instruction, outlines the common agreements and practices in place for the key elements of distance learning.

2020-2021 LSUU Board Meeting Schedule
Our board schedule for the 2020-2021 school year can be found on our website.

Integrated Field Review (IFR)
The IFR is an in-person examination of the implementation of Vermont’s Education Quality Standards (EQS). The review happens once every three years for each of Vermont's districts, and LSUU schools were visited in October, 2019.

The IFR is conducted by a team of educators from neighboring school systems, working together with AOE staff.  They visit the district for a day-long, in-person visit.  The visiting team records what they read, learn from interviews and observe. The IFR team then issues a final report featuring two district level commendations and recommendations in each of the five domains of the EQS.

LSUU’s final report commended the district’s focus on the physical well-being of students, parent satisfaction with school climate, high-quality staffing and professional learning opportunities, and use of several student management systems to community learning and expectations.  Recommendations included strengthening communications with parents regarding grading and flexible pathways, ensuring consistent feedback for all teachers, and examining the current use of integrating technology into instruction to ensure consistent practice across the district.

We are pleased with the positives outlined in the findings and will continue to support and assist the administration with addressing areas recommended for improvement.

Stowe Schools Lawn Care Bid Acceptance
The board approved the bid submitted by Lawn Rangers, Inc., for maintenance of the Stowe school grounds.
