A Message From Superintendent Tracy Wrend
We have been gathering feedback on the community’s hopes and dreams for the future of LSUU. The board is reviewing this feedback and using it to address decisions and action steps as we work to ensure that we are delivering a high-quality and equitable education system and improved, modernized facilities. While the work is ongoing, several themes are emerging.
Our community feels strongly that a skilled, dedicated faculty and opportunities for each and every student to excel and develop as well rounded individuals are necessary for a high-quality and equitable education system. Hopes and dreams for facilities encompass a much broader range of ideas, from keeping our schools the same to a long list of improvements in all the facilities. You can view the full online survey results here.
Lamoille South Unified Union, in conjunction with Healthy Lamoille Valley, recently hosted a two-day substance use training: Drug Impairment Training for Educational Professionals (DITEP). The training provided school personnel and community partners working with youth information to evaluate and document students suspected of abusing and being impaired by alcohol and other drugs. Participants from our entire region were engaged in the event.
This past week was Red Ribbon Week, a week dedicated to bringing awareness to drug/alcohol use in school. SHS’s Bettering Our School Surroundings (BOSS) group handed out red and orange ribbons at lunch and shared SHS facts related to bullying and drug/alcohol use. BOSS has combined the Red Ribbon Campaign with October's Bullying Prevention month to bring awareness to the negative impacts of bullying on our student community.
At PA, students attended the OVX, Our Voices Xposed, conference and are reviewing data from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Students are planning school and community engagement opportunities to increase awareness and promote healthy choices. Students are continuing their local prevention and legislative advocacy work to address the dangers of flavored tobacco products.
Lamoille South Unified Union Board Brief
November 4, 2019
Five great candidates were interviewed in open session for the two vacant seats on the LSUU board. The board had a very difficult decision to make, and, after much thoughtful deliberation, we appointed Norman Williams and Erica Loomis as Stowe representatives to the LSUU board until Town Meeting Day 2020. We hope that all of the candidates continue to consider opportunities for board service in the future.
David Bickford was appointed Chair of the LSUU board. David is a Morristown representative on the board and brings 25+ years of experience as a school administrator. We appreciate his willingness to serve in this important role.
Conflict of Interest and Open Meeting Law Complaints
The board reviewed Conflict of Interest and Open Meeting Law complaints received from Leigh Pelletier, a former LSUU board member. After consultation with legal counsel, we have affirmed that the board was not in violation of the open meeting law and that there was no conflict of interest.
High School Program Review
Stowe High School Principal Gretchen Muller and Peoples Academy Principal Phil Grant presented an overview of the two schools, outlining class sizes, staffing, activities, supports, community involvement, traditions and supplemental funding. These presentations are valuable tools in our discussions about LSUU priorities and expectations as they relate to a high quality, equitable education and our facilities.
Town of Stowe Use Fees
The Town of Stowe has analyzed district use of the Hockey Arena and is considering a substantial increase in fees beginning next fiscal year. LSUU board member Tiffany Donza will be attending Selectboard and Recreation Commission meetings to gather additional information.
