School Closure Update - Internet Connectivity

A Memo From Superintendent Tracy Wrend

With the Governor’s decision to suspend in-person school for the rest of this school year, we know parents and students are experiencing many different feelings and have many questions.  Each school has a variety of pathways for social-emotional support, from regular check-ins to small and large group student meetings, and counseling support.  If you have a need that we haven’t addressed yet, please ask. We will do our best to help or connect you with someone who can.

One need we know more and more families may need help with is internet access. We are exploring school-supported strategies, and many providers have responded with special offers. The offerings vary from free Internet to unlimited data. For the latest news related to internet connectivity, please see the Vermont Department of Public Service website

The following is a breakdown of what is being offered by some of the major Internet providers in our area:

  • X-finity/Comcast is offering free Wi-Fi to low-income families for 60 days and free Wi-Fi hotspots to everyone.
  • AT&T has removed all data restrictions and is offering internet access to low-income families for $10 per month; their Wi-Fi hotspots will be free to everyone.
  • Sprint has removed data restrictions.
  • The Federal Communications Commission has a list of companies and organizations that have signed the Keep Americans Connected Pledge.

If you need tech support for your school-issued device, please submit a ticket by emailing [email protected] or calling your school. Parents and students are encouraged to report issues. Our amazing tech team can help!

Fresh air and physical activity are an important part of staying well.  As you plan family outings, please note that the playground at Stowe Elementary School is now closed.  Please consider carefully any use of playgrounds at the Graded Building, Morristown Elementary School, and Elmore School. If you choose to use a playground, note that the Department of Health advises you to bring hand sanitizer with you and practice social distancing carefully.  Also, please monitor the Department of Health guidance for changes and updates regarding playground use and other outdoor recreation.

Best,
Tracy
